Handmade Portraits: Topsy Turvy Design

My pal Anne Alvergue produced this fantastic video about milliner Kim Dye for Etsy’s Handmade Video Portraits series that I work on as well. Anne and her hubby Michael Isabell headed to Oakland, CA and got to know a whole lot about the art of handmade hats.

My Visit to a Luthier in Tennessee

Here’s another installment of the Etsy Handmade Portraits series shot in Nashville. Etsy found Rob Kalin wrote a lovely essay about meeting James Peters, the maker of his handmade guitar. The video is a short verite piece of James and Rob talking shop.

Behind the Glass on DVD

A short film that I produced a number of years ago called Behind the Glass is now available on DVD. It was shot on 16mm and the print looks gorgeous. Here’s a synopsis written by the director Gabe Rhodes:

As digital projection technology replaces century-old projectors in theatres across the country, motion picture projectionists prepare to make their last stand against the encroaching forces of technology. Behind the Glass traces the evolution and decline of this romanticized craft as it profiles projectionists from drive-ins, movie palaces and multiplexes who lead the fight against the cheapening of America’s favorite form of entertainment. Shot entirely on 16mm!

Total running time: 21 minutes

Handmade Portraits: Betty Turbo

East Nashville artist Agnes Barton-Sabo aka Betty Turbo is all about cupcakes and moustaches! Agnes grew up in Alaska with an artistic family. Mom was an incredible seamstress who made matching outfits for Agnes and her dolls. Dad was an art history professor fascinated with animal spirits and great grandma was an interior designer in the 30′s. Agnes took inspiration from her family and went on to college for photography.

Shintaido & Butoh

In college I studied a Japanese body movement/martial art called Shintaido. My teacher Jennifer Hicks is now a Butoh performer as well. Here is the performance by the originator of Butoh, Tatsumi Hijikata.

Theo Angell – Deerling

I was recently mesmerized by my pal Theo Angell’s video vignettes Hillybilly Modern, created during his 2006 residency at Caldera. It’s full of snowglobe worlds, electric rainbow dancers and hillbilly happenings… Since it is not available online I thought I’d share another of Theo’s brilliant body of video animations. Deerling is a collaboration with Finnish psychedelic folktress Jonna Karanka of Kuupuu.

Handmade Portraits: Armor Guitars

Etsy founder Rob Kalin and I headed to Nashville a few weeks ago to meet luthier James Peters of Armor Guitars. We had a fine time visiting with James and his family. Drank a bunch of whiskey, played music and took in the beautiful scenery of their private little Shangri Las.

Check out the rest of the Armor Guitars videos on Etsy here and here.
