Thurston Moore & Michael Chapman, Fretboard Journal

The Winter ’09 issue of Fretboard Journal has a terrific interview between Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth and guitarist Michael Chapman. For the past few years I’ve been producing a short documentary called Fully Qualified Survivor about Michael Chapman’s music and his life on Wrytree Farm with his wife Andru. Michael will be coming to the US to perform at the Jack Rose Memorial Concert in Philadelphia February 13th and playing some additional dates on the East Coast.

The Jesus Lizard at Irving Plaza

The Jesus Lizard played a ferocious show last Tuesday night at Irving Plaza in NYC. I hadn’t seen them live since ’93 or ’94 in Boston and they were just as amazing and intense. Somehow Shanin, Shah & Zach from Ex Models and I wound up drinking beers with David Yow and Sims after the show. Good times indeed. I would LOVE to go to the New Year’s show in Chi-town… you never know…

Pierced Arrows show

Last night I got to check out Dead Moon’s Fred & Tooty at Mercury Lounge in their latest oufit, Pierced Arrows. Sounded just like all Dead Moon tunes I ever loved. NYC’s own Endless Boogie opened the night with some sonic boogie rock. Good times.

Check out my pals Kate Fix and Jason Summers fascinating documentary on Dead Moon called Unknown Passage: The Dead Moon Story.

All Tomorrow’s Parties (documentary)

In December of 2006 I headed to Minehead, UK to help shoot the All Tomorrow’s Parties Nightmare Before Christmas festival. My main objective was to follow friend & festival curator Thurston Moore for the documentary All Tomorrow’s Parties. It was a Detroit rock, noise music blow out. Highlights were Nurse With Wound, Negative Approach, Iggy Pop, Sonic Youth, NNCK, bowling with Awesome Color and the Wolf Eyes afterparty where the porch caved in… Keeping up with Thurston was way more difficult than I’d expected. Even though he’s 6’5″ and was wearing a fluorescent orange hat, it was a constant Where’s Waldo scenario. At some point I had him talk into the wireless mic whenever we split up so I could find him haha… The film was supposed to emulate The Year Punk Broke but since Thurston was hosting over 200 bands and was on the go, his time in front of the camera was limited. But the whole shoot was a blast and I think we got some great footage. I’m looking forward to seeing who and what made the final cut at next weeks screening at ATP in Monticello

Thanks to producer Luke Morris of Warp FIlms, director Jonathan Caouette, All Tomorrow’s People and Thurston Moore for letting me contribute to this film.

Check out Ecstatic Peace Andrew Kesin’s rad photos of ATP 2006. I’m in a couple of pics in the “Off Stage” section.

Sleep – Dragonaut

Above is stoner rock band Sleep’s video for Dragonaut from the album Holy Mountain. Definitely one of my all time favorite records. Check out those dreads on Matt Pike! You might recognize this tune from the film Gummo. And here you can see the album art for Sleep’s Dopesmoker and Jerusalem by my pal Arik Roper. Yeah…

Flower Travellin’ Band

Last night  I saw Flower Travellin’ Band at the Studio in Webster Hall. They played a lot of blues, fusion type tunes that I wasn’t expecting… but I was thankful to hear Satori live. Akira “Joe” Yamanaka still had an amazing vocal range. The sun shines everyday…

Pentagram’s Bobby Liebling

Pentagram played a phenomenal show at Webster Hall in NYC last weekend. Bobby Liebling was out of his mind and sounded incredible. His theatrics reminded me of some silent film villain, a rock & roll Nosferatu or Caligari. It was so good. Above is a Pentagram show from 1983 at The Silver Fox in Woodbridge.

Earthless & Witch at the Williamsburg Music Hall

Last night I went to see Earthless and Witch at the Williamsburg Music Hall. Earthless were mind blowing as usually… It was good to see the guys from Witch, they rocked it hard. Here’s an interview I shot with Witch at the SXSW 2006 Arthur Magazine party, for Toyota’s Yaris festival website. The audio is’t so hot but it’s still pretty darn funny…

WFMU Record Fair

The WFMU Record Fair in NYC is this weekend! I got some goodies last night including the live 13th Floor Elevators lp from ’66 and an original German pressing of Gun. Nice. Sister Jen Black and I had a groovy time digging for vinyl treasures…
