Here’s the latest Etsy video I produced for our series on home decor and amazing spaces There’s No Place Like Here. Read the full article on Etsy’s blog.
Pam Kueber of blog Retro Renovation was originally looking for the Victorian farmhouse of her dreams in the Berkshires, but for various reasons (price, location, size) she and her husband ended up falling in love and purchasing a 1951 Colonial Ranch house instead. Although the house has aspects of a modern ranch house — the step down living room, the open dining room — a large portion of the house feels more Colonial or, as Kueber coined, “Mid-Century Modest.”
This webisode of There’s No Place Like Here was shot with my old pal and former Sundance Channel colleague Tina Spangler, a.k.a LuxtonLake. She moved upstate about five years ago to a little forgotten community of Narrowsburg, NY, called Luxton Lake. Once a thriving vacation destination for African-American New Yorkers, the area was mostly abandoned in the 1970s when the dam was removed and the lake was drained. Tina found a dilapidated 1950s cabin in foreclosure and with very little funds, decided to take the leap and fix it up. Spending time at Tina’s sweet little cabin upstate makes my long for a get away in the woods of my own! I’m working on it…
What a treat to shoot the home of Alice Saunders, a.k.a. Forestbound, and Francesca Zmetra, a.k.a. The Snail and The Cyclops. These two gals live right around the corner from where I used to live in Jamaica Plain, MA after I finished school at Mass Art. Their aesthetics are very simpatico with mine. A love of vintage postcards of mountain scenes, raw birchbark, 1940′s suitcases and feedsack dresses… I felt right at home in their lovely abode.
Artist, filmmaker, surfer, and world traveler Dustin Yellin creates intricate volumetric tomographic paintings and hunts for salvaged treasures during his extensive travels. His incredible studio space is a 1500 square foot warehouse in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Yellin has filled the space with an eclectic collection of street finds and friends’ artwork. From paintings and drawing by Gavin Anderson and Gibby Haynes to animal skulls, snake skins and giant wooden sculptures, this artistic hub is filled with natural history wonders and contemporary art.
I had a blast shooting this video with Dustin, he’s a super cool cat with tons of drive and talent. We found Dustin through the excellent photography blog The Selby. Thank you Todd Selby!
Last fall Etsy sent me to LA for several shoots. While visiting old friends I was lucky enough to make the acquaintance of Hannah Kopacz of Made With Love By Hannah. What a treat! Her German chalet inspired abode, filled with twenty years’ worth of knick knack and ric rac treasure hunting, was a perfect fit for our new Etsy video series There’s No Place Like Here. Last minute we set up a shoot and I’m so thrilled we did. This colorful home was overflowing with vintage and handmade gnomes, figurines, mushrooms and veggie people. Even her studio shed was painted to look like a cuckoo clock.
Yesterday I had an excellent shoot at the Red Hook Labs with the talented Dustin Yellin. Dustin has a fantastic eye for unusual natural science oddities and salvaged treasures which lay everywhere. Between that and his incredible artwork there was plenty of eye candy to shoot for the There’s No Place Like Here – Dustin Yellin episode. It’s gonna be a doozy. Stay tuned.
We just started a new video series on Etsy called There’s No Place Like Here, where creative types show us their unique spaces — infused with their aesthetic and filled with the treasures they collect.
In January I headed to Philly to shoot the incredible, renovated Philadelphia loft of design duo Something’s Hiding In Here. The space was so amazing, full of woodland goodies, refinished furniture, faux bois aplenty, a woodshop, and even an indoor porch swing.
I just got back from a super fun shoot in Philly with the kids behind Something’s Hiding In Here for the new Etsy home decor video series There’s No Place Like Here. Shauna Alterio & Stephen Loidolt were two of the most productive, inspired and lovely people I’ve met. Here’s a link to a Sneak Peek post about their fabulous loft on Design Sponge. Keep your eyes peeled for the series launch of There’s No Place Like Here in February on Etsy.
