Sculptor Louise Bourgeois died today at age 98. Bourgeious’s abstract organic works made a huge impression on me in art school and will forever be one of the artists I look to for creative inspiration.
“Ms. Bourgeois’s sculptures in wood, steel, stone and cast rubber, often organic in form and sexually explicit, emotionally aggressive yet witty, covered many stylistic bases. But from first to last they shared a set of repeated themes, centered on the human body and its need for nurture and protection in a frightening world.” – The New York Times
Patti Smith chronicles her 22 year friendship with artist Robert Mapplethorpe in the new memoir Just Kids. In my development as a creative person Patti Smith has been a huge influence and inspiration. These remembrances of her early days in NYC, the music and poetry scene and her romance with Mapplethorpe are sure to satisfy my nostalgia for a time that that I didn’t live through but feel so connected to…
Listen to Patti Smith on Fresh Air talking about her career and unique relationship with Robert Mapplethorpe.
The Jesus Lizard played a ferocious show last Tuesday night at Irving Plaza in NYC. I hadn’t seen them live since ’93 or ’94 in Boston and they were just as amazing and intense. Somehow Shanin, Shah & Zach from Ex Models and I wound up drinking beers with David Yow and Sims after the show. Good times indeed. I would LOVE to go to the New Year’s show in Chi-town… you never know…
Last weekend my pals, Brooklyn psych rock band Oneida played an epic jam at the Flaming Lips curated ATP festival. The event that Onedia proposed was to recreate their recording studio Ocropolis and invite fellow musicians to come take part in an all day jam. Many musicians participated including members of Akron Family, Birds of Avalon and Boredoms. Oneida rocked hard for 10 hours straight! I recorded as much as I possibly could on two cameras (thank you Monica Hampton!). It was an exhausting but exhilarating day…
Here’s the video for for Sonic Youth’s Sacred Trickster directed by my pal Tom Surgal. Tom is a multi-talented musician and filmmaker. He plays drums in the band White Out with Lin Culbertson and has played with a ton of other amazing musicians such as Sonic Youth, Samara Lubelski and Nels Cline. Tom has also directed a bunch of music videos for Sonic Youth and Pavement among others. His excellent music series at Club Midway called Red Dessert Nights has featured performances by PG Six, Sightings, NNCK, Spectre Folk & Jack Rose. I even got to dj for the Spectre Folk/Loren Mazzacane Connors show. Soooo good. This video is for Sonic Youth’s new album The Eternal on their new label Matador. Right on Tom.
My pal Marc Walkow curated a special screening of the 1977 Japanese surrealistic horror film Hausu last Thursday night at IFC as part of the New York Asian Film Fest. This bizarre film about a house that eats people hasn’t been shown in the theaters in 30 years. Luckily Janus Films picked it up and plans to release it on DVD but you can catch another screening Hausu at IFC on July 2nd. Don’t forget your psychotropics.

After stuffing our faces for Thanksgiving, a bunch of us watched Fantastic Planet, an incredible psychedelic animated 1973 science fiction film. Production for the film started in 1968 in Prague’s Jirí Trnka Studios and the film went on to win the special jury prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1973. Brilliant!
This Tuesday night October 14th Michael Chapman and Jack Rose will play at the NNCK space in Harlem. After ten years of a myriad of legendary underground musicians passing through its doorway the Hint House will soon be no more, so please join us for this event…
The Chapman/Rose tour marks Michael’s third tour in the US in thirty years! Mark Orleans will join Jack Rose on slide guitar and special guest Bridget St. John will play with Michael Chapman and perform a few of her own songs. Prior to the music will be a screening of short films by Theo Angell, Todd Ledford and selected scenes from my Michael Chapman biopic Sea of Wine. Films start at 9pm, music will follow. Hope to see you then.
